There is a popular notion that art will not get you anywhere in life unless you are extremely talented, that is why most artists opt for a business major rather than their passion. Art is everywhere, if you need proof, go to the supermarket and you will find that artists can work in their field of choice. You don’t need to buy a thing. Just stroll up and down the aisles and look at the products displayed. A unique design that sets a product apart from other competitors up on the shelf with it.

Throughout the corporate world, graphic artists are hired, to help business set their products apart. It is just one example of the type of work that you can do to earn a living in the field of your choice, this is the nature of graphic design. Designing logos, company letterheads, brochures, tee-shirts, and an endless list of items that may be used to promote a business, are the reasons why corporations hire graphic artists.

Graphic arts departments are actually being put up by many large companies. An in-house staff is maintained to work with company-owned products and establish brand identity. These departments typically have a formalized process for designing materials, products, and packaging so that all of the products from this company have a similar style. A limited color palette, font type, or general style is what you have to work with. Branding works this way. If you’re the experimenting type and like to dabble into different things, a design studio may be more of your liking.

Working for a design studio means you will work with a variety of clients, each of whom has their own unique style that you must either conform to, or create from scratch. Working for a design studio requires a lot of flexibility. A style that is praised by one client as brilliant, may be crushed by the next client that walks through the door. So to be successful in a design studio, you must be a good listener and able to understand what your client wants, even though they may not be able to clearly communicate their vision.

If you decide to go out on your own and freelance, the same skills that are required by design studios are also needed to be a successful freelancer. When you work with clients, it is important to not take criticism personally. Expect that the client will ask you to go back and make revisions. This does not, in any way, reflect on your talent. It is a process to work with corporate clients and differs greatly from working alone in a studio. If you were not a born team player, this is one thing you need to learn especially if you want to earn a living doing what you love.
